ABOUT EVENT
As we all are aware, Zero Hunger by 2030, is the first sustainable development goal set by the United Nations, which India is committed to. Further, with the country’s population set to cross 1.5 billion by 2030, it is crucial to ensure that food security is maintained through sustainable production and distribution systems.
While being a leading producer of agro commodities, in terms of potential India still has a lot more opportunities to offer, which can be enabled through an effective and economically viable cold chain which will integrate the supply chains of perishables, thereby reducing physical waste and loss of value of perishable commodities.
The 2020 pandemic has exposed alarming fragility in our agri-food supply chains and have brought to the center stage Hyper local supply chains which benefit farmers, customers, as well as the environment.
For perishables, in particular, developing sustainable hyper local value chains require energy efficient post - harvest management solutions however given the fragmented nature of the value chains these have to be based on aggregation model for viability.
There have been successful energy efficient solutions deployed on ground by some start-ups, pilots have also been initiated by some International agencies like UNEP. Cool Coalition is one such example, working towards transitioning to efficient, climate-friendly cooling for all. Also, some advanced FPOs have adopted technology solutions for better post-harvest handling of their produce. However, these models need to be scaled up to make the local value chains more sustainable.
At present, cooling produces 7-11% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, and these emissions are expected to roughly double by 2050. So, a new industrial revolution powered by millions of sustainable climate friendly innovations is essential which can prevent post-harvest losses and contribute to nourishing societies globally. We need to think geographically while having innovations for Global problems and reorientate them towards resolving Global challenges.
With this background CII’s Food and Agriculture Center of Excellence (FACE) is organising Sessions on 3rd March 2022, on a virtual platform, focusing on catalysing science-based policy action on sustainable post-harvest innovation with International Researchers and Stakeholders sharing perspectives from crucial issues such as climate change and its impact on cold chain markets to sharing experiences on adaptation in the region and dialogues with Startup founder talking on nature-based solutions to prevent postharvest losses Globally.
